The 906th Air Refueling Squadron will celebrate two historic milestones this summer with its 50th anniversary in aerial refueling operations and mission complete at Grand Forks AFB, N.D.

The squadron traces its proud heritage back to 1941, when the 16th Reconnaissance Squadron was commissioned at Fort Douglas, Utah. As World War II escalated, the unit was reassigned as the 406th Bombardment Squadron and saw action in both the Pacific and European theaters.

On June 1, 1959, the 906 ARS was commissioned at Minot AFB, N.D., and began global aerial refueling operations. The squadron transferred to Grand Forks AFB in February 1994. The 906 ARS has brought fuel to the fight in every major conflict from Vietnam to the current Global War on Terror.

As is tradition, the final flight of the 906 ARS is scheduled for 3 p.m. June 16.

At 9:06 a.m. June 19 in the Northern Lights Club here, the 906 ARS will signal mission complete at Grand Forks AFB. The ceremony is open to retirees and other members of the community with base access.
