Even though the 4th of July is over, fireworks remain a traditional part of summer. For many of us, this time of year isn’t complete without sparklers and the chorus of ooh’s and aah’s when it finally gets dark and the big show begins.

However, these fun celebrations can quickly be ruined when people are careless, do not follow proper safety precautions, or use fireworks inappropriately. Every year 8,500 people are treated for fireworks-related injuries; nearly 600 of them are injured so badly that they require hospitalization. Because of that, it is very important to know fireworks precautions, so that you can have a safe and enjoyable experience.
Choosing a proper location is very important when using fireworks:

- Although fireworks are legal throughout most of North Dakota, they are prohibited both on base and within the city limits of Grand Forks.

- Choose a smooth, flat surface away from vehicles, buildings, dry leaves or other flammable materials.
Know who should use fireworks:

- Do not allow young children to play with fireworks under any circumstances. Nearly 40 percent of people injured by fireworks are children under the age of 14. Even sparklers, which many parents consider “safe,” can cause severe burns.

- Older children should only be allowed to use fireworks under direct adult supervision.
Follow some tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety as to how to use fireworks safely:

- Always read and follow label directions.

- Buy from a reliable and reputable source.

- Keep a bucket of water handy.

- Light fireworks one at a time.

- Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.

- Never throw fireworks at another person.

- Never shoot fireworks from metal or glass containers.

- Never put any part of your body over a firework.

- Eye protection should always be worn by the fireworks shooter.

- Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks.

If you do decide to set off your own fireworks this summer, just remember to use caution and to follow the appropriate safety measures.
