Scouts collect food, help local food banks

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Recently, several Boy Scouts from Troop 319 and Cub Scouts from Pack 319 on Grand Forks Air Force Base participated in the 20th annual "Scouting for Food" event, a national program that collects nonperishable food donations for base and local food pantries.

Over the course of one evening, more than 20 boys went door-to-door in their neighborhoods asking for food donations to give to community charities. With the help of the base First Sergeant's Group, the scouts were able to collect more than 1,300 pounds of food.

Scouting for Food is the nation's largest one-day food drive, raising 15 percent of area food pantries' yearly supply and feeding the hungry in the community for three months. The Scouts publicized with local families, asking those who wanted to participate to fill plastic bags with nutritious, nonperishable food, and leave them on their doorstep for pickup.

Troop 319 and Pack 319 meet various nights throughout the week on base and are always eager to welcome new members to their ranks.
