On Grand Forks Air Force Base, there are only three airmen dorm leaders who take care of more than 300 Airmen in the dorms.

One of those dorm leaders is Staff Sgt. Jonathan McRoy, 319th Civil Engineer Squadron.

"I have been an airmen dorm leader for almost two years now," said the Miami native.

When Sergeant McRoy joined the Air Force nine years ago, he joined as an aerospace propulsion apprentice.

"When I arrived here two years ago, I was working in the maintenance squadron for about a year before I deployed," said Sergeant McRoy. "When I returned from deployment I saw an advertisement for this position and I applied."

The application process included receiving approval from his chain-of-command, from his functional manager at Air Force Personnel Center, and from the gaining squadron. It also required an extensive record review and an interview with the command chief.

"After I applied, the whole process only took a month," said the driven Airman. "I believe the process went quickly because I made myself available for the things I needed to make sure I was proactive in receiving the position."

Sergeant McRoy said an airman dorm leader is a two year special duty with an option for a third year if the person would like to extend.

Currently, Sergeant McRoy is planning on extending his special duty for a third year.

"Usually, when people don't extend, they return to their career field or they re-train or they simply apply for another special duty assignment," stated Sergeant McRoy.

Sergeant McRoy said he joined the Air Force to serve the citizens of this country.

"I joined because I believe the Air Force serves a profound purpose to our country that is indescribable," said Sergeant McRoy. "I also wanted to partake in what the Air Force offers individuals for development."

At the moment, Sergeant McRoy is enrolled in online classes to finish his graduate degree in management sciences.

"I will be graduating next year," said Sergeant McRoy.

Outside of work, Sergeant McRoy has a variety of ways he spends his free time.

"I am very active and I keep up with politics, social issues that affect our nation as well as our military," said Sergeant McRoy. "I also like to volunteer in the community with organizations, such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

I also enjoy watching old cartoons from my childhood like Woody the Woodpecker or Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers," he added.
