Warrior of the Week: Airman 1st Class Cole Grim Published Sept. 27, 2011 By 2nd Lt. Jessica Tait 319th Air Base WIng Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- While he may be arguably the most kind-hearted "Warrior of the North," don't be fooled by his warm smile and friendly eyes ... he's a "cyber warrior." "The Air Force is starting to see cyberspace as a whole different warfront," said Airman 1st Class Cole Grim, 319th Communications Squadron. "So much of what we do relies on having the capabilities of the Internet and being able to communicate quickly. It's something we really need to defend." Airman Grim has excelled since joining the Air Force and his passion for his job is evident through his accomplishments. "While I was at tech school, I got distinguished graduate," beamed Airman Grim. "Here I just got selected for Below the Zone and Diamond Sharp, an award given to Airman recognized for exceptional performance." This California native didn't always plan on joining the Air Force. "I was a computer science major at UC Santa Cruz before I joined," said Airman Grim. "I'm looking forward to finishing that degree with the help of the Air Force. It makes me feel really good to be in the military and have a secure job." This indie acoustic guitar player's social life has also blossomed along with his professional life. "I've met so many people here," Airman Grim said. "I think one of my favorite things about joining the military is that I'm always meeting new people and making friends." Still, most of his friends here are unaware of his previous occupation. "I was a baker for two years before I joined," said Airman Grim. "I got to make donuts and cakes. My favorite part was putting the designs on the top with icing." Airman Grim has put his oven mitts away and picked up his Speedo. "I really enjoy swimming, so having an indoor pool here has been really cool," regaled Airman Grim. "I go swimming here every day. I'm even looking at doing the U.S. Master Swim meets here in town and in Minneapolis." With shop full of buddies who enjoy playing video games like League of Legends together, this family-oriented Airman has been welcomed by a whole new family. "Our shop has been really supportive," said Airman Grim. "It is really easy to succeed when you have everybody working together."
