Today's Air Force hires many contractors to do various projects throughout its installations.

However, there is still a long list of projects that are completed thanks to the effort and precision of skilled military craftsmen in the civil engineering career field, including Airman 1st Class Adam Simmers - the newest Warrior of the Week at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D.

"He's a good worker. You can count on him to follow necessary safety guidelines and stay on task," said fellow structural apprentice Staff Sgt. Benjamin Dye. "Plain and simple he helps gets the job done."

Simmers completed the Construction Technology training course at technical school in Gulfport, Miss. In addition to learning how to follow blueprints, Simmers also learned about the construction of structures and the different materials used to build them.

Simmer estimates that he's worked on between 50 to 100 different projects since he arrived on base about eight months ago.

"I've worked on various projects from something simple like fixing a door to building new office spaces," said Simmers while adjusting his tool belt and his military-issued eyeglasses that serve as eye protection for the sawing he carefully prepares to do.

"The thing I like the most about my job is the constant change in the type of work we do," said Simmers, a 27-year-old native from Dover, Ohio. "I've worked boring factory jobs before, so having breaks from routine work definitely makes the job more enjoyable."

Although he has found enjoyment as a structural apprentice, he looks forward to the future beyond the Air Force and hopes to focus on structures of the biological kind.

"I came into the Air Force with a four-year degree in psychology and I have two years of nursing done." Simmers said. "My goal is to complete my nursing degree and help others as a registered nurse."

Simmers said he was shocked to find out he was selected as the base's newest Warrior of the Week.

"I had no idea, but I think the news about this will definitely put a smile one faces of my parents back home," Simmer said.
