Warrior of the Week: Airman 1st Class Jay Traver Published April 18, 2012 By Tim Flack 319th Air Base Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The latest Warrior of the Week at Grand Forks never planned on working a job that involved a lot of time behind a computer screen. "I'm a hillbilly they stuck in the computer world," joked A1C Jay Traver, a 22-year-old from Genoa, Ohio. "I didn't normally sit behind a desk." But his hard work as a Knowledge Operations Airman earned him the 319th Communications Squadron Airman of the Quarter for the last part of 2011 and a recent Diamond Sharp award. Traver went to college after high school, something his mother, a teacher, pushed for. After changing majors three times in two years, Traver decided to follow his grandfather's footsteps and join the Air Force. Traver said he's a bit surprised by the recent accolades, and stressed that he's just doing what his parents taught him: Working hard. "I just do my job and do it to the best of my ability," Traver said. It's the same intensity he brings to athletics. He wrestled and ran cross country in high school. At Grand Forks, he's played ultimate Frisbee, softball and has served as a Physical Training Leader. "I just like working out, staying fit," he said. Staff Sgt. Vanessa Glenn, NCOIC of Content Management/Base Publications, supervises Traver. She lauded his hard work and community involvement. "He has been in the Air Force less than 24 months and he already has his 5-level and his CCAF," Glenn said. "He is dedicated to the community also," Glenn said, referring to his volunteer help with a local high school wrestling team. "You don't just come to work from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and go home," Glenn said. "It's the whole-person concept we're looking for." Master Sgt. John Smith, communications squadron first sergeant, selected Traver as a Diamond Sharp winner, "because he has a fantastic attitude and gets things done." "This Airman is a money maker," Smith said.
