Airman 1st Class Sara Guajardo's behind-the-scenes work has major impact on the Air Force mission at Grand Forks.

Whether helping keep the runway clean of debris and clutter as an Air Field Management Apprentice with the 319th Operations Support Squadron, or playing the trumpet as part of the Honor Guard, Guajardo - the latest Warrior of the Week - shines.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Guajardo joined the military because of the appearance that two retired service members displayed. Though she had never met them, their professional demeanor propelled Guajardo to see a recruiter and eventually join the Air Force.

While going to college and working two jobs seemed like "the life," Guajardo said joining the military was the correct choice.

"In the civilian world, how many people can go out on a runway and make sure the planes are all right, and make sure the airfield is in working order?" asked Guajardo.

Guajardo wants to take full advantage of every opportunity the Air Force provides, including the Honor Guard. Being a member of the Honor Guard allows her to play the trumpet at events, and since she plays it as a hobby, she said that it's perfect for her.

She started playing the trumpet in sixth grade, and has not stopped since. She practices her skills wherever she can.

"It's been a tradition in my family. My grandpa played the trumpet professionally and my dad also played trumpet," said Guajardo.

She has gone as far as buying a silencer for her instrument, allowing her to play it anywhere without being a noise distraction.

In the Air Force community, lauded for her musical passion and skill.

"I just like to play the trumpet for fun; I don't do it to get noticed," said Guajardo.
