A Global Cardboard Challenge event is coming to Liberty Square here Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The GCC was inspired by an enterprising 9-year-old boy named Caine Monroy, who created his own "arcade" of games made completely out of cardboard. His ingenuity gave rise to the Imagination Foundation, with a mission to find, foster and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in children worldwide, and raise a new generation of innovators and problem solvers.

Nirvan Mullick put together a short film about the arcade, posted it online, and watched it go viral. He then created a second short film, "Caine's Arcade 2: From a Movie to a Movement," and within five months of launching, more than 100 schools in 90 countries participated in the School Pilot Program, and more than 270 Global Cardboard Challenge events in 41 countries were organized worldwide.

For the event to be held here next month there will be entry categories for ages 5-8, 9-12, 13 and up, and families. Airmen are welcome to participate as well. Creations should be made primarily of cardboard, and fall under one of the following categories: games, robots, machines, nature, and out-of-the-box.

Anyone with access to the base is welcome to display their cardboard creations at the event to get a chance to win prizes chosen by a local celebrity guest panel. All entries will have a chance to win the People's Choice Award via votes from all attendees and participants. Door prizes will also be given out, well as event bags with snacks and water for participants, while supplies last.

Some supplies may be picked up at the Youth Center during regular business hours starting Sept. 9 while supplies last. Participants may also choose to use their own materials.
