Grand Forks AFB to host Boxing Nite

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. --  The 319th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host Boxing Nite on April 12, at the 3-Bay Hangar here.

"Excitement over Boxing Nite has steadily increased since we first proposed the idea a few weeks ago," said Chaplain (Capt.) Ruben Covos, one of the event coordinators. "We hope the excitement translates into a large crowd, and allows guests to remember this event as a tremendous knock out."

Covos said the special sporting event is designed to improve morale by providing another indoor event to help the populace cope with the winter blues.

He also said Boxing Nite would do more than entertain boxing aficionados and sports fans alike.

"Since we haven't had any air shows in recent years, this event is great opportunity to show the community our new mission," said Covos. "We are both happy and proud to show off one of our Global Hawks."

The fight card will have international significance as fighters from both the U.S. and Canada will be competing against each other.

Locals will have more than enough reasons to cheer as boxers from the Fargo and Grand Forks areas expected to slug it out in the ring.

"The event is taking place on our base, so we naturally couldn't host Boxing Nite without one of our Warriors of the North stepping into the ring," said Covos, referring to Airman 1st Class Sean Egan, from the 319th Security Forces Squadron.

Eagan won't be the only Airman or security forces defender to showcase his boxing skills.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Rodriguez from the 91st Missile Security Forces Squadron and Senior Airman Tavarus Roberts from 791st Missile Security Forces Squadron at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., will be two other Airmen hoping to prove why people around these parts say, "Only the best come north."

"This will be an awesome opportunity to foster relations and sportsmanship with our fellow Warriors from Minot said Covos. "I heard the mission support group commanders are already talking smack between the two."

Event officials expect eight bouts for the night in the light weight to heavy weights classes.

The event will be open to the public, but will require visitors to fill out a Gate Access Form prior to the event and then e-mail the completed form to 319FSS.Boxing@us.af.mil.

The names of guests will then be added to the gate access list and asked pay cash at the door for their reserved ticket.

General seating tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Fitness Center (cash only) and JR Rockers. VIP tickets, are prices at $20, and are available only at JR Rockers.
