Please take a moment to read Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”.

While I am not as eloquent as Dr King, as you read through, I want you to think about the increasing polarization of American society, whether it’s across racial, religious, sexual orientation, or political lines.

Dr. King says, “Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states… Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.”

As the military is a microcosm of American society, this polarization is one of the reasons why the DoD has instituted Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. The very real concern is division within our country represents a threat to U.S. National Security. This division will be increasingly exacerbated by an adversary eroding our will as an American people to unite in the event of war, which would result in the end of our democracy and the American way of life.

So, if you’re off this weekend, enjoy your three-day, but please take a moment to remember what it’s for.
