MSS serves it to Services Published March 30, 2007 By Staff Sgt. Amanda Callahan 319th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The 319th Mission Support Squadron blitzed the 319th Services Squadron, 25-10; 25-19, during a volleyball game March 28 at the fitness center here. MSS won the coin toss and elected to receive the serve as the first of the two games began. Mission Support took the first point of the game. Due to the strong, unchallenged spikes from MSS' Robert Mummert, they kept the lead 16-9. Mummert's defensive efforts also helped Support keep the serve for most of the game. But, it was an ace from Tess Armstrong finished game one, with MSS winning 25-10. MSS led game two with the serve, but the first point went to Services. Mission Support came back after being behind; led by Todd Gauthier's four unanswered serves, bringing MSS ahead 12-10. After a well-played volley by both teams, Support's Randi Norton tipped the ball over the net to bring the score to 15-13. SVS' Donald Johnson's labors gave the serve back to his team, but errors from Services negated Johnson's efforts, giving control back to MSS. Mummert's skill paid off again, as two aces bombarded SVS as they watched their victory slip away. Jamie Zimmerman dropped the final bomb on Services with the last unacknowledged serve. "It was a heart-wrenching loss," said Johnson, SVS player/coach. "We're all going to be one squadron in three weeks, so I don't want to say anything that will get me in trouble," he said with a smile. "I feel outstanding," said Gauthier, MSS. "I think we are really starting to come together as a team."
