Recently, Warrior of the North and Bottineau, N.D., native Senior Airman Jamie Tranby was named the Air Force honor guard member of the year for 2006.

The award is given to only one Air Force member each year.

With hundreds of ceremonies and funerals under her belt, the award shouldn't have come as a surprise, but the modest Airman was shocked to hear she'd won.

"I'm very excited," she said. "It's overwhelming. I didn't join the honor guard for any sort of recognition. I joined because I love what it stands for. I feel good just doing the job."

Airman Tranby has served on the base's honor guard on and off for about two years.
The Grand Forks AFB honor guard has the second largest area of responsibility in the Air Force and performs ceremonies and funerals for a 151,000 square-mile region.
