Summer Bash to kick off this month

Much of the base will take a day off Aug. 23 for Summer Bash 2007. The annual event pits squadrons, groups and other units against each other in various sporting events.

This year's event won't just be about inter-squadron competitions, there will also be activities for families as well, including a classic car show.

Free food will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Liberty Square courtesy of the 319th Mission Support and Services Squadron.

Additionally, various organizations will have food available at booths around base.

The events and unit representatives are below.

Events

7 a.m. - 5K Run or walk: All Squadrons should try to participate to kick off the annual sports day. The maximum number of competitors from each squadron is four, one woman and three men. The times will be added from all four competitors and the team with the lowest time wins. Participants can run or walk. This event will start in front of the fitness center and will end at the same location. It will be the normal base route with a distance of 3.1 miles.

9 a.m. - Volleyball: This will be a single elimination tournament, four on four, rally point scoring. All games will be played to 21 points. Each team must have one female on the court at all times, no exception. Maximum number of teams is two from each squadron.

9 a.m. - Three on three basketball: Teams are comprised of three. This is a single elimination tournament. The maximum number of teams is two from each squadron. Scoring - Each regular field goal is worth two points. A successful shot from behind the 3-point arc is worth three points. There will be a 15 minute time limit or 21 points to win.

9 a.m. - Golf, two-person scramble: The maximum number of teams is one from each squadron.

9 a.m. - One pitch softball: There is a limit of one team per squadron with a 10-person team, in a single elimination tournament. Each team will have one pitch utilizing their pitcher. Teams will play four innings or 30 minutes whichever one comes first. Home team will have last at bat if time limit expires.

9 a.m. - Horseshoes: This will be a single elimination tournament with two teams per squadron. Teams consist of two individuals. A match will be one game to 31 points.

9:15 a.m. - Tennis: Each squadron will be allowed two men and two women to participate in a single elimination tournament. Matches will be singles with pro-set scoring. There will be two divisions, men's and women's.

9:30 a.m. - Darts: One game of 501 singles, single-in and single-out. The maximum number of competitors from each squadron is three. This is a single elimination tournament.

10 a.m. - Ultimate Flying Disk: This is a single elimination tournament. Each squadron may have one team of seven players. The game will have a 15 minute time limit.

11 a.m. and 1 p.m. - Bowling: Squadrons may enter a maximum of two, three-person teams. Each team must have at least one female member. Points are awarded in the single total team scores after two games.

11 a.m. - Combat swim: Participants must complete a swim from one end of pool to the other, wearing the full battle dress uniform, including combat boots and carrying an M-16 dummy gun. The team with the fastest time wins. Each squadron may have one team of three people.

11 a.m. - Dodgeball: (Played in a circle with the opposing team inside of the circle. Players will have five minutes to target as many people as they can).
There will be one, six-person team from each squadron, and it will be a single elimination tournament. Each team must have at least one female player.

11 a.m. - Kickball: Each squadron may enter one team of nine players; one player must be a female. This is a single elimination tournament. The first team to 10 runs or 15 minutes, whichever occurs first, wins.

1 p.m. - Soccer kick: The maximum number of teams is one from each squadron. Teams must have three men and one woman. Teams must kick the ball into the goal (there will be an obstruction in the goal). Each kick is worth one point, and every person will get five kicks each. The team with the most points wins.

1:30 p.m. - Egg toss: The maximum number of teams is four from each squadron. The team must consist of one male and one female. Heats will be determined depending on the number of entries. The top two teams from each heat will advance to the finals. All players must stay behind the lines when tossing and catching the egg. Teams are eliminated as their eggs break.

2 p.m. - Tug-of-war: There will be one, eight-person team per squadron. Teams must have the unit commander, first sergeant and at least one female.

3 p.m. - Bed races: The team must be composed of five people: one driver/rider and four pushers/pullers. This is a single elimination race. Teams will be judged on speed, costumes and bed theme. More information may be picked up at the front desk of the fitness center.
