Health officials in North Dakota are predicting that Influenza-like illnesses could be on the increase in coming weeks, according to the 319th Medical Group.

That includes Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, a contagious viral disease that can lead to serious health problems, especially for young children.

RSV may infect a person's lungs and breathing passages, most people are hit with the illness by the time they turn 2 years old, and people can get the disease more than once. While most people recover in a week or two, RSV can be severe - especially for infants 6 months or younger. Premature infants or those with lung or heart problems are considered high risk for RSV.

Base public health officials say there's no vaccine to prevent RSV, but there are simple steps to take to protect you and your family this year, to include:

· Wash your hands - frequently - with soap and water for at least 15 seconds
· Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
· Don't share cups or eating utensils
· Refrain from kissing
· Ensure you're children eat well, get plenty of sleep and stay hydrated

Babies and children who are infected with RSV don't necessarily have to be seen my healthcare providers if they aren't experiencing breathing difficulties, or high fevers lasting more than 3-5 days.

· At-home care includes:
· Tylenol and Motrin as needed for fever and pain
· Nasal saline with suctioning as needed for runny nose/congestion
· Cool mist humidifier in the bedroom
· Oral hydration
