Spring is in the air and it's time to start thinking again about bicycle safety.

Safe Kids Grand Forks - part of Safe Kids Worldwide - will be on base April 18, 2012, to help local youth ensure they're wearing properly fitted bicycle helmets, according to Jayne Flaagan, Parent and Child Center director.

The Safe Kids personnel will be at the center from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to Flaagan. They'll have plenty of helmets for sale at cost, she explained.

But kids won't have to purchase a helmet for the inspection, she added.

"If they already have helmets and they're not sure if they fit, they can bring them in," Flaagan said. The staff will be more than happy to ensure they're fitted for safety.

"Safe Kids Grand Forks is a community-wide Coalition that exists to educate the community and to prevent unintentional injuries, the leading cause of death and injury among children 14 years of age and under," according a statement on the organization's Web site. "Safe Kids Grand Forks Coalition members include, but are not limited to: EMS, law enforcement, fire, service groups, childcare providers, parents, University of North Dakota staff, and Altru Health System staff."
