Finance officials warn of scam letter targeting military community Published April 10, 2012 319th Air Base Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Defense Finance and Accounting Service is warning the military community about a "scam letter" that is currently in circulation. The letter - purporting to be from DFAS - is asking those engaged to military members' to pay a $350 fee to register to become eligible for benefits in the event of the troop's death. "Bottom line, save your money," DFAS officials said in a statement on their official website. "It's not true, it's not a DFAS letter, it's a scam. Please let your fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and families know the score." DFAS officials stressed the organization would not send "unsolicited email messages with attachments ... or letters asking you to send money to pay for some benefit that sounds too good to be true."
