319th Safety Office hosts Motorcycle Rally Published May 24, 2012 By Tim Flack 319th Air Base Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The roar of the Harley Davidsons and blaring rock music here May 23, 2012, couldn't drown out an important message to the community: Safety, safety and more safety! Lt. Col. Brian Mahoney, 319th Air Base Wing chief of safety, said the Motorcycle Rally and Safety Fair held in the parking lot of Fast Eddies was a great way to address the important issue and to kick off the annual "Critical Days of Summer" campaign. "One of the biggest threats is motorcycle safety," Mahoney said, especially given North Dakota's short riding season sometimes unfavorable road conditions. "Speed, youth and poor judgment can come together," on the roads, he said. Staff Sgt. Julane Bentley, ground safety non-commissioned officer for the Wing, helped coordinate the event, which featured a motorcycle show, slow-ride competition and a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a group ride on the flight line and picture opportunity with a Global Hawk. Mahoney said getting the various riders - young and old - together was key for the day, calling it an opportunity for "mentorship." "They'll talk about the bikes, and start sharing stories and fellowship," Mahoney said. Mahoney took the time for face-to-face interaction with participants, asking Motorcycle Safety Foundation questions. Those who answered correctly were rewarded with a Safety Coin - something Mahoney asked them to carry in their riding gear. Bentley said she hoped those who visited the fair enjoyed the festivities. "Enjoy the Critical Days of Summer, enjoy Memorial Day weekend and be safe," she said.
