The Warriors of the North took a day away from their normal schedules Aug. 9 to enjoy the warm sunshine, camaraderie and friendly rivalry of Summer Bash 2012.

Summer Bash, as well as its counterpart, Winter Bash, is an annual event held here, designed to boost morale and increase esprit de corps.

The day began with a 2.2-mile formation wing run immediately following Reveille. The day's main events featured competitions including speed golf, four-on-four sand volleyball, a kickball tournament, obstacle course, horse shoes, amazing race, firefighter challenge, egg toss, dodge ball, three-legged race, fire truck pull and bed race.

Other features included a watermelon eating contest, music, free hamburgers and hot dogs, a moon bounce, t-shirt tie-dyeing and a car show.

A crowd favorite was the dunking booth, where Grand Forks AFB senior leaders, including Col. Tim Bush, 319th Air Base Wing commander, took turns being dunked. The dunking booth pulled in more than $400, which will go toward this year's Air Force Ball in September.

Following the day's sports competitions was an awards ceremony recognizing the winners.

Coming in first with 240 points, the 319th Operations Support Squadron were named the 2012 Summer Bash Champions. With 215 points, the 319th Civil Engineer Squadron finished in second place. Taking third, with 170 points, was the 69th Reconnaissance Group.

Colonel Bush closed the day's events by thanking everyone who participated, and encouraging winners to be proud of their accomplishments.

"We had a great turnout today, it's been a lot of fun," he said. "We want everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves, but above all, be safe and make good choices."
