Breast Cancer Awareness events in Grand Forks

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and members here are promoting awareness through a variety of events.

Statistics from the National Breast Cancer Foundation say that this year alone, more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. And one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women ages 45 to 55, as well as the second leading cause of cancer deaths.

Here's what officials on the base and in the local community are offering this month to help bring breast cancer into daily discussion:

2nd Annual Breast Cancer Walk
Registration begins at 5 p.m., walk begins at 6 p.m.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day: Students and facutly are invited to wear pink, and pink ribbons will be provided to all students.

Saturday, Oct. 13
Family 5K Diva Dash: Participants may walk, run, jog and bring their pets along. The only requirement is to dress in pink, and the best costume will earn a prize. Free lunch will be provided at Liberty Square following the event.

Wednesday, Oct. 17
"Pretty in Pink" Celebration: An event centered around women and breast cancer awareness. This year's guest speaker includes Dr. Bonnie Omdahl, radiologist, who will talk about breast imaging. A cancer survivor will also share her personal story. Several members of Altru Cancer Center will also be present to provide information and meet the public. The event is free and open to the public.

BooBees 5k Fun Run: Dress up in your best "breast cancer inspired" costume. Costumes will be entered in a prize drawing. Registration will take place on race day only.
