The vaccinations had been limited to active-duty members starting in September because of low national supply levels. But officials are happy to announce that all family members and other authorized beneficiaries are now welcome at the immunization clinic. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that usually causes fever, cough and sore throat, but can occasionally cause more serious illness or even death. The influenza virus is mainly spread among individuals by droplets, and a person can be infected by touching a surface or object where the virus may be residing and then touching their face or mouth. Certain people are at greater risk for more serious complications if they are infected with the virus, especially young children, pregnant women and the elderly. Statistics show anywhere from 3,000 to 49,000 people die from the flu each year in the United States alone. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. Flu season normally begins in October with seasonal flu activity peaking in mid-January or later. To stay healthy, it is very important to receive the vaccine as soon as possible. Flu vaccines are recommended for all persons 6 months of age and older. It is also important to make sure you frequently wash your hands, especially after coughing or sneezing and before eating.
