New Year for Improvement: HAWC set to help you meet your fitness goals Published Nov. 20, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Zachiah Roberson 319th Air Base Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Health and Wellness Center is introducing new fitness improvement programs scheduled to begin here Jan. 2, 2013. More than 10 classes are set up to promote a better lifestyle for Airmen. Classes will be offered in four main categories: Running Improvement, Muscular Fitness Improvement, Nutrition Improvement and Total Body Improvement. These programs are designed with positive progression in mind and a plan to get people moving, said Leah Melquist, Health & Wellness Center health promotion manager. "The classes aren't just for those failing but also for those that want to improve their score," said Melquist. "We hope members take advantage of all that we have to offer. These classes are free and created for Airmen." Courses include: RUNNING IMPROVEMENT The "Running Clinic" is a three-session class providing natural running guidelines known to reduce impact on critical areas on the body. "Run for Speed" is a 30-minute class that will help endurance runners to increase their speed. Classes meet every Wednesday in the field house at 6 a.m. The final running improvement course is tobacco cessation, which discusses the ways in which a smokeless lifestyle can help improve a person's lungs for running. MUSCULAR FITNESS The "Push it Up" program, which helps improve posture as well as improve strength and endurance in pushups, meets every Thursday in the field house from 6 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. ·Ab Blast" is a 30-minute class designed to improve strength and tone as well as reduce abdominal circumference. Classes meet every Tuesday in Gym 2 at 6:30 a.m. Core strengthening classes are also offered by the Physical Therapy Clinic. To register call 747-5546. NUTRITION The Nutrition courses provide information on how to improve nutrition intake. The Performance Nutrition class offers recommendations for optimal nutrition for fitness and weight management. Call 747-5546 to schedule an appointment. Looking for the Edge: Dietary Supplements is a course designed to inform consumers of what dietary supplements are all about. OVERALL FITNESS "Return to Fitness" is a one-hour class which acts as a conduit from physical therapy to regular workouts. The class will split into two half-hour segments; 30 minutes for cardio and 30 minutes for strength building. Classes meet every Tuesday in the field house at 11 a.m. "Total Body Blast" is one hour of high-intensity workouts that strive to help people lose weight and gain muscle. Classes meet every Thursday in the aerobics room from 11 a.m. to noon. "Better Body Better Life." This program lasts 10 hours, splitting the time into five two-hour modules. These modules cover nutrition, physical activity and behavioral issues. "Fitness is a cornerstone in every Airman's life, and we want to offer our members as many ways to not only meet their physical fitness requirements, but excel in their physical fitness to maximize their health benefits," said Denae Grove, HAWC exercise physiologist.
