Base Family Child Care Program named best in 2012 by AMC Published Dec. 5, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Zachiah Roberson 319th Air Base Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The 319th Force Support Squadron here was recently recognized as the Air Mobility Command Family Child Care Program of the Year for 2012. Pamela Schumaker, family child care coordinator, said the child and youth programs have been working hard to improve youth functions on base, and this award directly reflects what they have achieved. "All of us here have been working hard to make sure all of our programs are operating at their maximum potential," said Schumaker. The major contributing factor for winning this award is the Family Child Care Resource Center, added Schumaker. The center assists with in-home licensed providers by allowing them to checkout supplies necessary for starting a new child care business. Currently, Grand Forks Air Force Base has four child care providers who are certified to care for up to six children at a time. "The providers on this base are amazing, they are the ones willing to give their time and open their homes to nurture and care for children," said Schumaker. The Family Child Care office works with the Airmen & Family Readiness Center in the Great Expectations course, which briefs new parents on what to expect with a child, child care and offers an infant and child CPR class. Another program that has gained momentum is the free PCS (permanent change of station) child care service. Sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society, this program offers 20 free hours of family child care for Airmen leaving or arriving at a new base. "I think this award is a great honor, not just for us but everyone and every agency that helped us get to where we are now," said Schumaker.
