Youth Center seeking 'First Tee' youth golf coaches

  • Published
The Youth Center is seeking volunteers to help teach life skills to base youth through a golfing program called "The First Tee."

Michael "Coach Spud" Anthony, director of youth programs at the Youth Center, is running the 12-session program beginning Feb. 1.

First Tee is a multi-level educational training program that prepares staff and volunteers to deliver life skills experience to youth. The philosophy that drives these programs was developed with input from leading experts in the field of positive youth development. Through a progressive series of activities and educational experiences, coaches learn to empower youth to explore options and make their own decisions, two elements that are critical to the development of a child's value system.

Research shows that the First Tee coaches play a key role in creating positive relationships that inspire young people to look into their future, set goals and discover their potential.

Individuals can progress through several stages of the First Tee coach program depending on the level of involvement and training desired. These include:

* Assistant Coach
* The First Tee Coach-in Training)
* The First Tee Master Coach

Those interested must visit the Youth Center to fill out a volunteer packet.
