319th Mission Support Group changes commanders

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Col. Tammy Knierim assumed command of the 319th Mission Support Group from Col. Joseph Douez during a change-of-command ceremony here July 29.

During his tour of duty at Grand Forks AFB, Colonel Douez was responsible for leading 1,200 military and civilian personnel serving in six squadrons, supporting flying operations for the wing's 12 KC-135 Stratortanker aircraft. Colonel Douez also served as "mayor" for the base's 2,400 people and was emissary to 28 cities. For his leadership during his time as commander, Colonel Douez was awarded the Legion of Merit during the ceremony.

"Words cannot describe the pride I have today," said Colonel Douez, speaking to the crowd. "Through all the great things this group has accomplished, you have shown a great dedication to taking care of the wing, and getting the job done."

"Thank you for everything, it has been my pleasure to have served with you," he added.

Colonel Douez's next assignment will take him to Offutt AFB, Neb., where he will work at U.S. Strategic Command.

Colonel Knierim served as Director of Integration Engineering at Scott AFB, Ill, prior to her assignment to Grand Forks AFB. There she was responsible for providing responsive terrestrial, air and space network and information integration engineering capabilities.

Colonel Knierim entered the Air Force in 1989 after graduating from John Carroll University and earning her commission through Officer Training School. She has served in several assignments at the base, group and headquarters level in multiple commands.

"This day, this ceremony isn't about us up here," said Colonel Knierim. "It's about the Airmen who support the wing on a daily basis. I now have the privilege to walk by your side as we move forward, ready to accomplish the mission"
