Registering your privately owned firearm is not only a good idea; it's a mandatory obligation for base residents in both housing and the dorms.

All base residents have a responsibility to register privately owned firearms with the 319th Security Forces Squadron as soon as possible after arrival or purchase, per Grand Forks Air Force Base Instruction 31-101.

All personnel residing on base must ensure their POFs are properly registered no later than Feb. 15, 2011.

Below are the requirements for registration.

All base housing residents will register POFs in the security forces management information system with the 319th SFS's Pass and Registration. Pass and Registration will only accept the Air Force Form 1314, Firearms Registration, for registration of weapons.
- All required registration documents will be distributed and initially completed by the individual's unit. This will include a mandatory Lautenburg Ammendment briefing.
- Squadrons will make firearm registration part of their in processing requirements.

Personnel occupying on-base dormitory rooms or rooms in a temporary lodging facility are required to register their firearms in SFMIS and to store them in the Security Forces armory. Personnel requiring storage (temporary or permanent) for their POF will report directly to building 652, 319th SFS Armory, to complete an AF Form 1314 and other appropriate forms.

Personnel occupying on-base dormitory rooms or rooms in a temporary lodging facility may not possess the following weapons in their rooms at any time:
- Instruments capable of propelling a projectile by compressed air, gases, springs, or other mechanical or physical means. Such weapons include, but are not limited to, pellet guns, BB guns, bows and arrows, underwater spear guns, hunting slingshots, and throwing spears.

These weapons will not be stored in the security forces armory; arrangements must be made to store at another location, i.e. supervisors' house, first sergeants office.
- If the individual elects to store the weapons at an on-base location other than the security
forces armory it is still mandatory to register the weapon in SFMIS.

Base residents purchasing firearms or personnel with firearms moving onto base from an off base residence will register their firearms with 319th SFS Pass and Registration within 72 hours of purchase and/or move.
