“Springing” into motorcycle season Published March 14, 2012 By Tech. Sgt John I. Tagita Jr. 319th Security Forces Squadron GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The weather is getting warmer and it is almost time to get our motorcycles out for the short riding season we enjoy here in North Dakota. As motorcycle riders, we need to make sure we are paying attention to the weather and road conditions to ensure we make it home safe and can still contribute to the work that our great squadron is doing. While you may be anxious to get back on your bike and have fun, please remember that the snow is only just melting and there is still a lot of debris on the roads. Sand and dirt left over from the fast melt can spell disaster for any person on two wheels. Even though it seems like winter is over, anyone who has spent a few years here can tell you that there is still a very good chance that we will get more snow, so always have a backup plan in case you get stuck in some bad weather. Drivers, or "cagers," as we riders affectionately call them, have had six months on the roads without having to pay close attention to motorcycle riders. They are not going to be looking for motorcycles now, so expect it to be very dangerous. Don't drink and ride! Nothing more needs to be said here, but here is an alcohol awareness handout with helpful information and facts regarding alcohol and motorcycles. Lastly, your bike has been sitting for a few months; it is a good idea to do a safety inspection to make sure it is in good working order. Here is an inspection sheet to help out with that. If you find any discrepancies, take care of them before you get on the bike. If you are interested in riding a motorcycle, see your squadron Motorcycle Safety Representatives or contact Andy Swenson at 747-3367. Remember -- it is better to ask a stupid question than to get hurt or get in trouble.
