Grand Forks Air Force Base will continue to operate two schools, according to local officials.

The base school board voted March 20, 2012, against a recommendation to consolidate Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School and Nathan F. Twining Elementary and Middle School, according to Dr. Larry P. Nybladh, Superintendent of Schools for Grand Forks Public Schools.

"The district administration and school board will continue to monitor enrollment and consider options for the future in the coming year," according to Nybladh. "Based upon school board discussion, it appears this decision was based upon the desire to have another year to monitor student enrollment and base population and to address concerns raised for the consolidation option, particularly as related to planning facility remodeling that would make Twining School the most desirable to serve as a PreK-5 and 6-8 school facility."

Col. Tim Bush, commander of the 319th Air Base Wing, said he fully supports the school board's vote.

"I will continue to work closely with the base school board and the Grand Forks Country Public Schools to provide the best education possible for our military children," Bush said.
