File photo of Mike Mansfield circa 198

File photo of Mike Mansfield circa 1985. The Mansfield Fellowship Program is named after Mike Mansfield, who is regarded by some as perhaps one of the most notable statesmen/public service figures in the U.S. political sphere of the last 60 years, having served as a U.S. congressman from Montana, U.S. Senate majority leader and U.S. ambassador to Japan. President Jimmy Carter appointed Mansfield Ambassador to Japan in 1977, where he served longer than any other ambassador in history. A respected envoy, he successfully handled bilateral trade and defense issues at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo in the later stages of his career. (Photo courtesy of Great Falls Tribune)
