The Defender‘s Edge (DEFED) Program is a mental health promotion/resiliency program created by Dr. Craig Bryan while he was deployed to Iraq in 2009. This program differs from traditional mental health approaches in that it adopts a strengths-based philosophy intended to circumvent mental health stigma and prevent the onset of psychological and behavioral problems. The program has continued in the form of predeployment trainings for Air Force Security Forces personnel conducting combat missions. We are currently engaged in a large-scale implementation project at all Security Forces regional training centers. (U.S. Air Force photo illustration/Staff Sgt. Luis Loza Gutierrez)
