Defenders kick off National Police Week 2014 Published May 12, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Luis Loza Gutierrez 319th Air Base Wing Public Affairs GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Airmen of the 319th Security Forces Squadron kicked off their observance of National Police Week this morning with a formal reveille. "The security forces squadron is hosting these events to memorialize the [Air Force] Defenders and law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice," said Staff Sgt. Alonzo Clark. "We encourage everyone to please come out and show support as we honor those who fought the good fight." In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. This year's local National Police Week observance kickoff continues with the Fallen Defender Paintball Tournament at 1 p.m. at the Sun Flake Housing area located east of the base's main entrance.
