Staff Sgt. David Helmbrecht, 319th Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dog trainer, won his first professional Mixed Martial Arts fight May 8 at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Sergeant Helmbrecht finished the fight in the first round after 2 minutes and 26 seconds with a submission.

Sergeant Helmbrecht had been training since March in preparation for this fight. His training included working out and attending martial arts class two times a day over the past two months.

"Winning that fight was an unreal feeling, as soon as I applied the choke, all the built up pressure was lifted off my shoulders," said Sergeant Helmbrecht.

Sergeant Helmbrecht future plans include taking a brief break for a few weeks and then start training again. Sergeant Helmbrecht said that he will fight in the next fight that comes his way but he has nothing planned at the moment.

"I'd like to thank everyone who came and cheered for me, especially my fellow Defenders," said Sergeant Helmbrecht.

MMA is a mixture between numerous forms of martial arts including kickboxing, boxing, Muay Thai, jujitsu, karate, Taekwondo and wrestling. Each fight consists of three, five-minute rounds inside a cage.
