The National Arbor Day Foundation recently named Grand Forks Air Force Base “Tree City USA” and a winner of its “Growth Award” for commitment to forestry.

The naming marked the 13th year the base has been recognized as a “Tree City USA,” which honors communities that maintain a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
The Growth Award recognizes continually improving performance in forestry planning and management, tree inventory and analysis and maintenance of wildlife habitat.

“Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and town, and provide environmental and economical benefits,” said John Rosenow, president of the National Arbor Day Foundation. “A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks.”

“This year we received the ‘Sterling’ Tree City USA designation, noting that we’ve received ten years of growth award recognition. This is a great honor and something that only Wahpeton and the base share for the entire state,” said Kristen Rundquist, the base’s natural resources manager. “This recognition showcases our commitment to preserving our national environment; a commitment we continually focus on every day.”
