September is National Preparedness Month, an annual outreach program sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that educates and empowers Americans to prepare for and respond to natural and man-made disasters like flooding, active shooter incidents and terrorist attacks.

This year’s theme is “Disasters Don’t Wait, Make Your Plan Today.” Defense Logistics Agency Chief of Staff Kristin French is encouraging senior leaders and supervisors to promote emergency preparedness among their staffs with a focus on four weekly themes:

“A resilient DOD community is better prepared to execute the national military strategy in the aftermath of major disasters or emergency situations affecting the homeland. A culture of preparedness is the foundation for readiness and resilience that supports DOD’s ability to protect the nation,” French said in DLA’s annual preparedness guidance.

Being aware of risks and developing emergency plans helps ensure employees, their loved ones and friends know what resources are available and where to evacuate in emergencies, added Juan Torres, DLA’s Emergency Management Program manager. He recommends people build multiple preparedness kits for work and home. Employees should also check insurance policies to ensure they have coverage for hazards like floods, earthquakes and tornadoes that are likely to occur in their areas.

“Plan for several days without electricity, water service, access to a supermarket or local services. Learn how to take practical safety steps like shutting off water and gas. And yes, plan for staying safe during a pandemic or infectious disease outbreak,” he said.

This is DLA’s ninth year promoting National Preparedness Month, which began in 2004.
